Dear Students,

On behalf of the United Nations Association of Canada, welcome to the first ever Model Arctic Council (MAC). From October 27-30, 2010, we are delighted to welcome high school students to Whitehorse, Yukon to discuss important Northern issues. The Model Arctic Council is an innovative forum for students to learn, interact, and grow as individuals while focusing on finding co-operative solutions to global problems. More importantly, students will gain insight into how governments work toward a common goal while being encouraged to take an active role in the future of their communities.

A simulation such as the Model Arctic Council provides the opportunity for students to learn and use important negotiation, public speaking, and interpersonal skills. As representatives of the Senior Officials, Ministers, Working Groups and Arctic Council nations, students will discuss important Arctic and global issues, working co-operatively toward mutually beneficial and sustainable outcomes.

The United Nations Association of Canada would like to thank the Arctic Council and the Senior Arctic Officials, as well as the funders from the Walter & Duncan Gordon Foundation, Exchanges Canada, the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade and Health Canada for their support of the Model Arctic Council.

I invite you to explore our website or contact us for additional information. We look forward to seeing everyone in Whitehorse this October! Best wishes for a fun and enjoyable time at the Model Arctic Council!
